Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease/syndrome characterised by vertigo, hearing loss, ringing in ears (tinnitus) and ear fullness. The cause of Meniere’s disease is a condition that is poorly understood. A thorough examination is essential to check the root cause of your symptoms.

Although the underlying cause of the condition is unknown, it is commonly thought that there is a build-up of fluid in the inner ear. Conventional management focuses on medication to control the inner ear fluid pressure.  However, studies have demonstrated that not all patients suffering with Meniere’s disease will have a build-up of fluid.  Meniers disease can be related to the eustachian tube, the upper cervical spine, the temporomandibular joints and the autonomic nervous system

Meniere’s disease can take many years to manifest. Meniere’s disease has been linked to whiplash injury (vehicle accident, head injury or sports neck/head injury). It has been shown that it can take a mean average of 15 years from the trauma to onset of symptoms. Because Meniere’s disease symptoms can take long to manifest. People cannot link this condition with a particular accident because they have forgotten or it happened a long time ago when they were young.

A thorough examination is essential to check the root cause of the problem. Then a specialised image of the neck might be requested to check the involvement of the neck. Clinical practice has shown that treating disorders of the neck can lessen Meniere’s disease symptoms. A study of 300 patients was done which showed that treating disorders of the neck improved the symptoms of Meniere’s disease patients by 60% after
